Center for Scientific Computation

3 years Operational Plan

(March 2001 - Feb. 2004)

As in the past 2 years, the Center will continue to organize a weekly Seminar Series on Scientific Computation, and to invite and receive visitors on scientific computation.

Specifies of the 3 years plan follow:

In the 1st year:

  1. Organize a one-day internal workshop on Problems in Scientific Computation, to provide a forum for all 39 Center members to describe their current research projects, so as to increase interactions and improve collaborations among members.
  2. Organize a 2-day short course on Computational Modeling in Environmental Fluid Mechanics (see attached).
  3. Apply for a central allocation grant for computing facilities. The many research programs listed in the Application require very large computing facilities (memory and CPU time) that are not available in UST. It is therefore essential for the Center to get external funding to build up its own central computing facilities.
  4. To make presentation (a booth, poster and other display of the Center) to the HPC Asia?s 5th International Conference and Exhibition in Australia, September 2001.

In the 2nd year:

  1. Organize the 4th Cross-Strait Computational Fluid Dynamics Symposium at HKUST, January 2003. (Expected numbers of participants: 60; Budget estimates: $250,000; to apply to various funding agencies for support). The 3rd one was held in Taiwan, February 2000.
  2. Make a proposal to apply for Area of Excellence in Scientific Computation with the following research areas as foci:

    1. Computational Environmental Fluid Dynamics
    2. Computational Materials
    3. Computational Biology and Chemistry

In the 3rd year:

Carry out research projects for the Area of Excellence in Scientific Computation.
